North West gives insight into her ‘blessed, awesome, cool’ life with first solo interview

North West, daughter of the two pop cultural titans Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, recently had her first solo interview with i-D Magazine. The world’s most famous 10-year-old shared details from her “blessed, awesome, cool” life, talking about her love for basketball, music and fashion.

North West, or Northie as she is affectionately called, has spent her life in the limelight, with her father being in relentless controversy and her mother being on one of the most successful reality TV shows of all time.

North loves the classics

North’s music taste shows clear influences from her father, with her showing appreciation for his work. She said her favourite song is the one that gave Kanye, or Ye, his original breakthrough – Through the Wire.

North might be an old-head when it comes to her taste in hip-hop, having a greater appreciation for the classics over the more recent hits.

When asked who the one person is she would like to meet, she answered with the legendary West Coast rapper Tupac. Her taste in music isn’t the only thing she gets from her father, as North enjoys singing and performing, the latter being her “favourite”.

When asked if she gets her love for singing and performing from her family, she answered, “Sometimes, mostly from me, though. And then a little bit of my dad.”

10-year-old style icon

In terms of fashion, North said her style icon is herself and that her favourite outfit is “vintage T-shirts and Spider sweats”.

She still looks to her parents for style because if she could have any piece of clothing, it would be the clothes from their closet, “if they fit me”, she added.

The best thing in her wardrobe is a Michael Jackson jacket that her mom got her for Christmas, she said.

North has been seen at numerous fashion shows, rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in the industry. As a baby, she attended the New York Fashion Week in 2015 and sat with Kim between Beyoncé and Anna Wintour.

She made her rap debut at her father’s Paris fashion show in 2020. She also showcased her stylish fits at the Dior Homme Fashion Show in 2023, Jean-Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Show and the Balenciaga Fashion Show between 2022 and 2023.

But for North, the best fashion show she has been to is: “My little sister’s fashion show in her closet.”

North’s passion for basketball

When she isn’t going to high-profile fashion shows or accompanying her parents to events, she likes doing art, shopping and basketball.

Her favourite memory also involves basketball because she remembers being bad at it initially. “So I know those memories and I’m like, ‘Ooh, now I’m so good’, I got so much better,” she said.

But North evidently takes basketball seriously. “It’s not a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. And I just love basketball so much.”

Being a basketball player is one of the options for what she wants to do when she grows up, along with being a rapper and doing art. At age seven, she wanted to be a boxer, but not anymore.

She added:

Despite having been in the public eye all her life, she said that she likes having her picture taken, but only when she wants to and not by the paparazzi.

North had some quick-witted replies to some of the questions she was asked. If she could be any animal, she would be a mosquito.

She gave the following reason: “I’m allergic to them and I can tell them all to leave me alone.”

North also inherited her father’s confidence. The three words she would use to describe herself are: “The best ever”.
