‘I tried popular £10 winter moisturiser for dry skin – it soothed my dermatitis’

With the weather getting colder, there may be quite a few of us that find that the chillier season likes to play havoc with our skin.

While there are tons of products out there that are designed for dry skin, there is one brand that has become a bit of a sensation over the years – CeraVe. The brand’s Moisturising Cream for Dry to Very Dry Skin in particular has become a bestseller on Amazon, with nearly 60,000 five-star reviews hailing it as a “miracle cream” for the winter season.

Even better, this top-rated Cerave cream has been reduced on Amazon for Black Friday, with a massive 454g tub being dropped from £19.18 to £10.61. In fact, that is cheaper than the £11.98 I paid as a Superdrug Health and Beauty Card member for a smaller 340g size tub. Meanwhile, Boots shoppers can get the same-size 454g tub for £17.

shopping Writer Rachel Williams decided to give the viral cream a go and see if it was worth the hype. Here’s how she got on.

If I am being wholly honest, I am one of those people. I have always been prone to dry skin, but the moment the winter arrives, the skin on my face, and particularly my hands, like to get quite dry and a little sore.

With my dermatitis flaring up again this year and numerous drug-store bought hand creams not helping really helping me out, I decided to see if the bestselling cream could actually live up to the hype – and if the Black Friday deal was really worth checking out.

How did I find the moisturising cream?

Developed by dermatologists, this generous-sized tub of cream has been described as a “rich texture” that has been designed to melt into the skin, rather than leaving it greasy, which can often be the case.

The first thing I noticed about the CeraVe cream was that it was a fairly thick consistency and that there was no overly strong scent as soon as you opened the lid, which is ideal for anyone who might suffer from sensitive skin that gets irritated easily.

As for the cream itself, despite the thicker texture, I was genuinely surprised to find that it was very lightweight and literally melted into the skin. Almost as soon as I smoothed some onto my hands, the dry patches in between my knuckles and joints felt immediately hydrated and soothed, unlike some creams that form a top layer on my skin but don’t actually provide any hydration.

The cream itself has been infused with three essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid and MVE technology to help provide instant and long-lasting hydration, which proves that a little certainly goes a long way with this moisturiser, as I found that my skin never needed another full application during the day.

Aside from delivering instant hydration, I also really liked that this cream didn’t leave that greasy top layer on my skin that instantly washes off. The fact that it is also unscented means that it’s not just ideal for dry skin, but for anyone who suffers skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and, like myself, seasonal dermatitis.

What have others said about the cream?

I am not the only to have been left impressed with CeraVe’s Moisturising Cream for Dry to Very Dry Skin, as it currently boasts a 4.6 out of five star rating on Amazon based on 59,975 five-star reviews.

One rave review read: “I’ve used countless creams and ointments and none work, they’re either too thick and stay white or to thin and dry out, this is perfect it’s a thicker cream but it also disappears once applied and doesn’t leave you looking shiny, I love it and anyone who struggled with dry skin please try this you will not regret it! I use it every day without fail and couldn’t live without now.”

While a second gushed: “I got this to try on my arms and legs as they get very dry, especially my legs often looking scaly. The first use melted all the dry skin away and only had to use a few times as it seems to have stopped the scaly and flaking skin on my arms and legs. Would highly recommend for anyone with very dry skin.”

A third added: “Love this cream, literally use it everyday and swear by it especially when my hands are really dry in the winter, i use it every night before bed and it has minimal smell no irritation at all and instant moisture without being slimy or have a residue and doesnt stain clothing definitely a must buy for me.”

Overall verdict

Out of all the creams and body lotions I have tried over the years, I think CeraVe’s Moisturising Cream is the only one to provide deep hydration to my skin without any irritation. Not to mention that one application is all you need, as it sinks into dry skin and lasts all day.

Add on the fact that it is a bit of a multi-tasker, and can be used as a facial and body moisturiser, I think that this has become my new go-to winter moisturiser and I don’t think I’ll be without it ever again.
