Couture tree competition returns as new Holiday Shoppe opens

When you walk into the Lord Baltimore Hotel, you don’t see your average Christmas tree standing tall in the lobby.Instead, you see couture tree creations made by local artists, including dresses accented with pine needles and creations with gemstones shimmering and lights shining bright.It’s all a part of the hotel’s annual Couture Tree Competition.”I tell you, people really step up their game,” said Lee Johnson-Lowe, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing. Johnson-Lowe started the Couture Tree Competition at the Lord Baltimore Hotel in 2014.”I had this idea of doing these couture trees,” said Johnson-Lowe. “I saw them online, and I said to my general manager, ‘I have this idea!’ I shared the idea, and he’s like, ‘Let’s do it.'”The hotel has hosted the competition ever since. Johnson-Lowe even does his own couture creation.”Last year during the holidays, I made my way to Longwood Gardens up in Wilmington, Delaware, and I saw this most amazing couture tree that was done in all red roses,” said Johnson-Lowe. “I snapped a picture and I was like, ‘I am going to remember this for next year for my couture tree,’ and that’s exactly where the inspiration came from.”Johnson-Lowe’s tree is one of 25 trees that will be judged on Dec. 6 at the hotel’s client appreciation event. People will vote and pick two winners.Last year, local artist Renay Beane won a prize for her Enchanted Butterfly Christmas tree, and she donated her winnings to South Church. She hopes to bring home a prize again this year.”My vision this year is ‘Silent Night,'” said Beane. “I love the Lord Baltimore Hotel. If you’ve been here, you should see the class in it, and just to have a tree here is phenomenal.”Couture trees aren’t the only thing that will get you in the holiday spirit at Lord Baltimore. They also have a new Holiday Shoppe where you can do some holiday shopping. The store has décor, jewelry, furniture, original art, shoes, accessories, sweets, and more, all made by local artists, creators and businesses.”It’s amazing,” said Johnson-Lowe. “(They have) some really nice last-minute gift ideas, some holiday décor. It’s just a really nice addition to what we are doing during the holiday.”Visitors can see the couture trees any time inside the hotel. The Holiday Shoppe will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 1-8 p.m. and Sundays from 1-6 p.m. The store closes after Christmas Eve.
