New Delhi: The social welfare department of Delhi government has lined up week-long events to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities that falls on December 3.
On December 4 and 5, the department will organise a two-day festival at Thyagaraj Stadium, where Green Craft Mela, an art fair, a counselling and job skill development workshop for people with disabilities, cultural performances and a seminar on ‘inclusivity and access’ will be organised.
Nukkad nataks, fancy dress competitions, fashion shows, cultural programmes, band performances, short-video screening and motivational talks have been planned at prominent markets, shopping complexes, malls, metro stations, schools and colleges, hospitals, parks, open communities and institutions of the department, said a government official. An all-India women’s conference will be held at Mandi House.
The festivities will end with the Delhi sports festival, Udaan, on December 16. “It is for the first time that around 50 events for persons with disability will be held, including a track-and-field one,” the official said. “This is the first time that such a large-scale programme is being organised. The idea is to promote inclusivity,” he added.
The celebration will be formally kicked off at Asha Kiran Complex in Rohini on Sunday by social welfare minister Raaj Kumar Anand. A fashion show will be organised in Dilli Haat Janakpuri, a singing and flash mob at Connaught Place’s Central Park, and a nukkad natak at Vasant Vihar Metro Station. TNN

In a rare punishment, officials responsible for a four-year delay in updating the category of a Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd employee from general to PwD will have to serve five days at a Delhi institution for students with disabilities. Chief Commissioner Rajesh Aggarwal expressed strong disapproval of the delay and set a December 31 deadline for completion. The court also asked MTNL to identify the responsible officials and submit a report. The complaint stated that the employee, initially recruited in the general category, later developed a permanent locomotor disability.
