Pencil thin brow 90s trend making a comeback – but there’s one big problem

Pencil thin brows are making a comeback with younger generations bringing back the startled look.

Overplucked eyebrows – previously loved by celebrities including Drew Barrymore and Pamela Anderson – were huge in the nineties.

But despite most people happy to leave it in the past – style experts say it will be huge this year.

A string of stars have been spotted recently with barely there brows, including actress Zendaya – despite the ‘startled look’.

Experts say searches for ‘thin eyebrows’ exploded by 92%, after the Challengers star and Doja Cat showed off theirs at the MET Gala.

Gen Z are dominating the trend, according to the data, with people aged 18 to 24 representing 74% of all searches.

A spokesperson for Fresha, who found the data, said: “Thin eyebrows are a fashion statement. Love them or hate them, wispy brows have been in the limelight since the 1920s, when silent movie stars would draw on defined, slightly downturned brows to enhance their expression.

“Also, thanks to models like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, thin brows were a fashion staple in the 1990s.

“In 2024, thin eyebrows are having a renaissance. Doja Cat and Zendaya, for example, both walked down the MET Gala 2024 red carpet with pencilled, dainty brows.

“Grammy award-winning artist, Taylor Swift has also embraced the rebirth of thin brows, sporting high, stencilled brows in her new music video, Fortnight.

“However, it is important to note that this year’s thin brows are unique. Despite their similarities, 2024 thin brows are tighter, more lifted and proportionate than those of the 1920s or 1990s.

“It will be interesting to see how this branch of the timeless fashion trend will continue to evolve throughout the coming years.”
