Arts center hosts free concerts, fireworks

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido hosts free outdoor concerts July 4-7 with food vendors on the Great Green at Grape Day Park, 321 Broadway. The concert on July 4 features Daring Greatly, Ian Moore and the Navy Band Southwest’s 32nd Street Brass Band and festivities from 4 to 10 p.m. The event culminates in the fireworks display at 9 p.m., which can be seen from central Escondido. Art group puts on July exhibit; entries sought

The Escondido Art Association puts on its July exhibit, themed “Outer Limits: Art from the Great Beyond” from July 10-Aug. 2 at the EAA Gallery, 121 W. Parade honors school district

Julian’s parade starts at noon July 4 on Main Street and is themed “Soar Like an Eagle,” recognizing the Julian Union High School District as the grand marshal. Attendees can join in carrying a huge American flag down Main Street before the start of the parade. Pre-parade activities start at 9:30 a.m., including a western re-enactment, musical performances and pie-eating contests. The flyover by vintage aircraft will be at noon to kick off the parade. More than 170 women volunteer at San Diego Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build event

San Diego Habitat for Humanity’s 16th annual Women Build drew more than 170 women from across San Diego County. Volunteer builders restored the safety of a Logan Heights duplex, which was damaged from flooding during January’s rainstorms. The project included repairing the duplex’s exterior and replacing the deteriorating fencing along with planting drought- and flood-resistant landscaping. At the same time, 11 teams built playhouses that will be donated to nonprofits that help area families in need, such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation and The Chicano Federation. The event raised more than $100,000 through sponsors and volunteers, and culminated with San Diego Habitat for Humanity honoring Luda Safransky with the Women Builder of the Year Award for her eight years of participation in the annual event, bringing together more than three dozen builders. Since it started in 2009, Women Build has brought together more than 2,300 volunteers to build or renovate 65 homes across San Diego County and raised more than $1.2 million to support affordable homeownership programs. Mobile health care for veterans

Veteran Affairs mobile medical units will be parked at a number of San Diego Metropolitan Transit System trolley stations to provide on-the-spot services to homeless veterans, including health care, urgent care, vaccines, prevention screening, pharmacy and lab services, telehealth services and information about veterans housing programs. The mobile medical units, called “Veteran Healthcare on Wheels,” will also offer help with benefits, enrollment and VA wrap-around services, such as employment programs, mental health resources and programs, substance abuse resources and caregiver support. The vans are scheduled to be at various MTS trolley stations at 9 a.m. Fridays. A medical unit will be at the MTS Old Town Station, 4009 Taylor St., at 9 a.m. July 5. Bay to Park Paseo provides a free guided tour from 10:30 a.m. to noon July 6 along Park Boulevard from San Diego Bay to Balboa Park to see installations designed by leading San Diego artists. The San Diego County Credit Union’s 10th annual Stuff the Bus campaign to raise money for back-to-school supplies for local homeless children has begun in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education and iHeartMedia radio stations to support Live Well San Diego. Coast to Crest Challenge starts new year

The Coast to Crest Challenge starts its eighth year on July 1 for hikers to sample the San Dieguito River Park’s trail network by finishing a series of five hikes, organized by the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. The deadline to complete this year’s series is June 30, 2025. For some of the hikes, the conservancy organizes “Walk N Talk” outings for groups. Community clinic starts diabetes education program

The Vista Community Clinic started a new Diabetes Self-Management Educationand Support program. This program helps community members with diabetes manage their condition. Participants learn about nutrition, physical activity, medication and monitoring blood sugar levels. The program includes personalized education led by a certified diabetes educator, registered dietitian and health care professionals. A School of Rock performance July 9 and “pre-party” reception at the Moonlight Amphitheatre will benefit Vista-based nonprofit Solutions for Change, which helps families get out of homelessness.
