I tried Rhode’s Pocket Blush and it was like a tinted filter for my dull skin

Hailey Bieber has a knack for creating a buzz around her product launches. Her strategic use of Instagram selfies, teaser shots and well-timed tutorials makes her a master of building anticipation. Over the last half year, fans, unwittingly, have also been treated to sneak peeks of Rhode’s latest offering through Hailey’s social snaps. Now, we’ve finally got the details.

In June, Hailey unveiled the newest launch into her Rhode brand: the Pocket Blush, £24. It’s a cream blush that offers a dewy, glazed finish and comes in six vibrant shades. Since the star is synonymous with flushed cheeks and ‘glazed’ skin, it’s hardly surprising that this might be her next venture into cosmetics. Having previously only dipped her toe out of the skincare category and into make-up with her Peptide Lip Tints this blush also marks her first real colour cosmetics launch.

In the name of thorough testing, I got my hands on the six shades and used them all for a full week before giving you my thoughts here.

Rhode Pocket Blush: An honest review

Pros:
  • The six shades have tints to suit and show against all skin colours
  • They feature skincare ingredients like peptides and tamanu oil
  • Easy to apply over make-up without making foundation look cakey
  • Can be built up into a more punch flush or swiped on for a sheer tint
  • Easy to blend with fingers or a soft brush
  • Compact size and lightweight
  • Twist up design to keep product mess-free
  • Can be used on lips and cheeks
  • They give a dewy, skin-like finish
Cons:
  • Need a bit of touching up throughout the day if you want a bold flush
  • Plastic packaging feels a little budget

I wrote two cons there for the blushers but I really struggled to find anything wrong with them – they’re everything I didn’t know my cheeks were missing. I have skin prone to dryness and looking dull, and these gave my complexion a youthful summer flush to fix those concerns.

I’ve now tried each of the six shades – Piggy (a soft pink), Freckle (a neutral peach), Spicy Marg (a bold coral), Sleepy Girl (a gentle mauve), Juice Box (a bright pink) and Toasted Teddy (a bronze terracotta) – and as someone with pale skin, I found the Piggy and Spicy Marg to be the two I reached for the most throughout the week. Darker complexions may be better suited to Sleepy Girl and Juice Box, which have good colour pay-off.

While I’ve noted the packaging feels a tad plastic-y, I do really like the feel of it. It doesn’t bother me at all, but I know we’ve moved more into refillable products now, so for some people it could be an issue. Aside from the packaging, the blush is just the right size to pop into your pocket or bag. The secure top cap prevents any accidental spills, and the twist up and down design means you never accidentally waste product by smearing it into the lid.

As I expected from Rhode, the blushes do indeed offer a super dewy finish that gives my cheeks a lovely ‘glazed’ effect. They don’t feel sticky or oily, and I’d liken the finished effect to more of a satin. The formula was also very easy to blend out with fingertips or a soft blush with minimal work – ideal as I like to apply blush over foundation and sometimes I find I end up wiping my base off trying to blend out a blush.

As for the pigments, all six shades are beautiful. Because of the skincare ingredients, I wasn’t entirely sure the colour would be punchy enough, but one swipe was enough for my subtle tastes. I did build the product up into a bolder look as well to test it, and it took very minimal work to get a more vivid tint.

My go-to shade is Piggy but I’ve also been reaching for Spicy Marg after finding out that’s the one Hailey loves most. “I want people to put it on and think, ‘There’s an Aperol spritz’,” she told Glamour, “Maybe that’s it – it’s Aperol spritz makeup next!”

Lead the way, Hailey.
