Florence Martha Clark McClelland

Florence was born in Dunkirk. NY on May 28, 1937, descended from early settlers of Laona NY.

A precocious student during a pre-feminist era. Florence was admitted to Cornell University’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Graduating with a double degree in English and Philosophy, Florence set out for New York City to Forge her career.

In NYC, Florence was quickly hired by the world’s second largest advertising agency. Her talents were recognized by the creative department, leading to a subsequent position at “Seventeen” magazine. Under the pen name “Abigail Wood”, Florence handled “Seventeen’s” advice column, until she was tapped to work in promotion. she collaborated with stores around the country to organize fashion shows and special events. She continued in this line of work as promotion director for “House Beautiful” magazine.

Family matters brought Florence back to Chautauqua County in 1968, where she and her late husband converted a ramshackle dwelling into a beautiful Silver Creek home. She commuted to Buffalo, working for the Catholic Diocesan newspaper and held jobs at several advertising agencies as the creative director of TV and radio commercials, newspaper ads, and voice-over work. Florence was a freelancer as well, working with local businesses and organizations.

When Florence’s father needed more help, she focused her efforts closer to home, helping to promote the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) and eventually joining County Executive Joseph Gerace to serve as the county’s Public Information Director/ Ombudsman. She finished out her varied and fascinating career in the office of Lakeshore Ford.

Florence was an active member of the Fredonia Shakespeare Club for fifty years. She was an avid reader and sparkling conversationalist, with brilliant stories from NYC’S “Mad Men” era. She enthralled listeners with tales of the many novelists and stars she’d encountered and known. Her spirit was not dimminished by the long illness she endured.

Florence is survived by her beloved life partner Michael Speziale and her dear cousins-in-law, the Hamlet family of Sheridan NY. Donations in Florence’s name may be made to the Fredonia Opera House or Lakeshore Humane Society.

A celebration of life of Florence’s life will be held at a future time.
