How to not be tricked by your treats on Halloween

It’s all fun and games until someone gets tricked by their treats, stay safe this Halloween by following these tips.

NEW YORK STATE, USA — The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is sharing ways your family can stay safe while still enjoying your Halloween candy.

While trick-or-treating, children may feel they have no limit on their candy consumption. If you allow your child to eat candy but not all of it, you can always donate treats to local hospitals or veterans.

If someone with food allergies is trick-or-treating, avoid candy that has unclear labels or ingredients. Candy that is repackaged should be taken with caution and parents should teach their children about their allergy. 

Some candies may have small pieces that can be a choking hazard or have small toys inside the packaging. Small toy pieces should be removed and make sure your child is old enough to consume certain candies to avoid choking.

Always avoid unwrapped, repacked, unsealed, mislabeled, or suspicious candy and if any is in your bag, throw them away.

State Health Commissioner, Dr. James McDonald, says that it is better to review these safety tips with your children to keep Halloween healthy and enjoyable.

“Simple steps like checking candy after trick-or-treating, and keeping an eye out for trick-or-treaters while driving, will help keep everyone safe on Halloween,” Dr. McDonald said.

Aside from the candy, children, and families buying costumes should be careful of buying items that may be hazardous.

 Items to be cautious of include colored contact lenses, cosmetics, costume fabrics, and accessories like wigs and jewelry with small pieces.
