Despite pushback, Rocklin boutique plans to go ahead with fashion show

The owner of a Rocklin boutique is defending its upcoming fashion show. The show is being organized to celebrate Wildflower Daydreams Boutique’s third anniversary and will be hosted by Sacramento drag queen A La Mode. “There have been false claims that this a drag show targeted at children. There have been claims that we’re raising funds for ANTIFA,” said owner Michelle Honath Tuesday. “It is a fashion show targeted towards adults.”Honath said that while A La Mode will give a performance, the focus of the event is a celebration of the business and that the event will be family-friendly for those who choose to bring their children.“My goal was to make this event inclusive because I feel like there are not enough inclusive spaces in Rocklin,” she said. “I really wanted everyone in the community to feel welcome.”Opponents of the event attended Tuesday’s city council meeting, encouraging the council to stop the event and expressing concern the event would be held in a city-owned venue.“We’re standing. We’re raising our voice. We’re being heard and we’re hoping our city council hears us,” said Matthew Oliver, a pastor at The Family Church in Rocklin. “Drag shows are sexual in nature and they’re not for kids.”Oliver and other opponents of the event held signs against the show, with some speaking during the public comment portion of the meeting. Oliver said he is specifically concerned with the fact that the event is open to all ages and is being held at the Rocklin Event Center.“What you do in your own home, what you do in a private event, a private function. What you do as an 18+ event and function, that’s not an issue here. The issue is when we start bringing in kids,” Oliver said. The event is ticketed and set to be held at the Rocklin Event Center, which is open to the public to rent for weddings, meetings and other events. Honath said she opened the event to all ages after hearing from parents they wished to bring the teens to the show. She is standing by her plans, hoping the event will be a fun, safe and entertaining time for those who attend.“I really just think it should be freedom for everyone to express themselves. We’re not stepping on anyone else’s rights and I just want the same for our business as well,” Honath said. “I understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s a private event and you can choose to buy a ticket or not.”Honath said she planned to have extra security, but that the event would move forward as planned. No action was taken by the city council on Tuesday as it was not on the agenda. Rocklin Mayor Greg Janda said he appreciated the number of people who turned out for Tuesday’s meeting and the discussion had, but that he did not anticipate the matter would be taken up again or added to the agenda for a future meeting.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app.
