In the relentless pursuit of fleeting trends, social media platforms often serve as both a battleground for self-expression and a breeding ground for toxic beauty standards. The latest storm to hit TikTok is the “legging legs” trend, a disturbing manifestation of unrealistic expectations that has left a trail of damage on the self-esteem of countless young women.

The inception of the “legging legs” trend, seemingly innocuous, began with a soundbite from the TV show Gilmore Girls. However, the repercussions have been far-reaching, with the trend dictating that only those with long, thin legs should dare to wear tight-fitting leggings.

Social media users have rallied against this toxic standard, with many TikTok personalities garnering millions of views for their vehement condemnation.

Prominent figures in the online space, such as Suzanne Baum, a lifestyle editor, and micro-influencer, express deep concern over the trend’s impact. Baum emphasizes the detrimental effect on body positivity and mental health, questioning the responsibility of platforms like TikTok in moderating such harmful content.

Similar sentiments are echoed by Hannah O’Donoghue-Hobbs, a social media manager and mother of two, who underscores the urgent need for collective action to combat these persistent and damaging trends.

Delving into the psychological toll, a 2022 Dove Self-Esteem Project survey unveils alarming statistics. The report indicates that 1 in 2 girls, aged 10 to 17, attribute low self-esteem to toxic beauty advice on social media, with 90% following accounts that negatively impact their self-perception.

Kamalyn Kaur, a psychotherapist and anxiety expert, sheds light on the mental health ramifications of these beauty standards. The narrow definition of beauty perpetuated on social media contributes to body image issues, low self-confidence, and unhealthy behaviours among young individuals.
